Amazon is currently facing allegations from the US Labour Board prosecutors for imposing illegal confidentiality rules on its employees. According to a Bloomberg’s report, the rule has prompted the company to revise its confidentiality policies.
The complaint was lodged by an official from the Labour Board. He alleged that the e-commerce company has mandated a confidentiality agreement as a condition of employment for a staff member of the drone programme.
The complaint further states that the agreement prevented employees from sharing information about the company’s money matters and how they do their work. The agreement also prevents employees from talking about the methods and technology used, even if the company didn’t say these were a secret.
The agreement has been termed illegal by the Labour Department as it violates federal workplace laws. The federal labour laws safeguard the right of workers to talk to each other about their working conditions, whether they are part of a union or not.
The board also alleged that this affects employees at all Amazon facilities in the US.
As per the report, the complaint was initiated by a former drone project manager. He expressed concerns about overly broad secrecy rules inhibiting networking and job-seeking for fear of upsetting current employers.
He believes the Members of the National Labour Relations Board (NLRB) will help strike a fair balance between employer privacy and employee discussion rights. He also filed a discrimination and retaliation claim against Amazon, which can reportedly have significant implications.
