As per the annual India Skill Report 2019, MBA students rank much lower when it comes to employability as compared to engineers. For the third year in succession, the survey —by People Strong, Wheebox and CII in collaboration with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Association of Indian Universities — discovered that engineers will continue to remain more employable.

It is reported that students are not attracted to MBA courses as much as they were earlier. In fact, the employability of MBA degree holders has come down by three percentage points in 2017-18.

Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi topped the list in terms of employability in that order, joined by Rajasthan and Haryana. The states that did not make it to the list were Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab.

Tier 2 and tier 3 cities, such as Thane and Nashik have made it to the top ten cities’ list, along with Guntur and Visakhapatnam. Clearly, there exists a good employable pool of talent in smaller cities as well.

Employability score, overall, has gone up to 47.8 per cent. The good news is that women’s employability has jumped to 46 per cent in the latest survey from 38 per cent last year.

The report reveals that 70 per cent of fresh entrants to the workforce expect an annual salary of at least Rs 2 lakh in their first job, with 47 per cent expecting more than Rs 2.6 lakh in their first job.

Over three lakh students were covered in the survey across 29 states and seven union territories. Among other skills, the students were tested on their command over the English language, ability to think critically, perform numerical calculations, level of domain knowledge and behavioural competence.
