Ola is readying to set up its second tech centre in India. This new centre, which will begin its operations in Pune, by the end of this quarter, will require 1,000 engineers who will be hired in the upcoming few years.
Ola has a 4,000-strong workforce in the country, of which 1,500 are engineers. The first tech centre is in Bangalore.
In June, 2019 Ola had opened an Advanced Technology Centre in San Francisco Bay to fast-track its electric and connected vehicles division. Given the fact that Pune has no dearth of tech talent and boasts of a good IT infrastructure, it seems to be the best city for tech companies to set up their offices and hubs.
Meanwhile, Uber — which had lost many of its senior engineers to other tech giants, including Google and Amazon — is now trying to expand in India to take forward its vision of making mobility and delivery “more accessible” and building a robust transportation network across the globe.
Uber recently hired Manikandan Thangarathnam, who was earlier with Amazon, as its senior director, with the responsibility of leading all rider and platform engineering teams in Bengaluru.
Interestingly, just a few months back, both Ola and Uber had laid off many of their employees to cut costs and reduce the financial burden brought on by the pandemic.
