Google is implementing layoffs in an effort to trim costs, with an undisclosed number of employees affected, reports Reuters. The layoffs are not widespread, and impacted employees will be given the chance to apply for other roles within the company.
The specifics regarding the number of employees affected and the departments involved remain undisclosed. However, some of the affected positions will be relocated to key hubs where Google is increasing its investments, including locations such as India, Chicago, Atlanta and Dublin.
This move has raised concerns about further job reductions amidst economic uncertainty.
The restructuring efforts, which began in the latter half of 2023 and continue into 2024, aim to enhance efficiency and align resources with the company’s core product priorities. Business Insider noted impacts on Google’s real estate and finance teams, including revenue operations, business services, and treasury departments.
Employees were informed of the restructuring by Ruth Porat, CFO, Google, via email. The plans include expanding growth in Bangalore, Mexico City and Dublin.
These layoffs come after a previous round of job cuts in January, where hundreds of employees across various teams were affected, signaling Google’s continued focus on investment and expansion in artificial intelligence offerings, as hinted by Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, earlier this year.
