In today’s rapidly-evolving tech landscape, many workers fear that artificial intelligence (AI) may replace their jobs. While AI can streamline business operations and reduce costs, it also raises concerns about job security. However, as one manager discovered, integrating AI into the workplace can lead to unexpected results.
A Reddit user shared an intriguing story about how efforts to replace employees with AI went awry. This user, who owns a managed service provider (MSP) firm offering cloud-computing services, recounted that his business had been stable, maintaining a well-paid and balanced workforce without any layoffs, until a senior IT technician named Harry was hired as a middle manager.
Harry quickly became enamoured with AI and its cost-cutting potential. His enthusiasm led to excessive micromanagement and constant proposals to the owner about using AI technologies such as ChatGPT to cut employee expenses. Despite Harry’s persistent suggestions, the owner remained skeptical about AI’s ability to replace technical staff. He recognised that while AI, including ChatGPT, had advanced capabilities, it lacked the agency to handle client interactions or technical troubleshooting—key aspects of the MSP firm’s services.
However, he did see potential for AI in middle management.
Ironically, Harry’s fixation on AI underscored the redundancy of his own role. The owner realised that ChatGPT, especially with its Code Interpreter mode, could manage many tasks typically assigned to a middle manager, such as calculations and spreadsheet processing. Over several months, the owner monitored Harry’s duties in preparation for a possible transition.
When a senior employee retired, the opportunity presented itself. The owner informed Harry that his own AI suggestions would be implemented, leading to the automation of his role. Harry was offered a choice: accept a redundancy package or retrain in Azure.
Harry chose to retrain, relinquishing the perks of middle management but keeping his job.
