The central government of India recently introduced changes to its leave policy, aiming to better support its employees who are building families through surrogacy or adoption. This update extends child care leave benefits to both surrogate mothers and adoptive parents who are employed by the government.
The new policy, detailed in a notification issued on June 18th, offers significant leave for women acting as surrogate mothers. These mothers will now be entitled to 180 days of maternity leave. Additionally, female government employees who commission a surrogate (and have less than two living children) will also be eligible for 180 days of maternity leave.
The update acknowledges the role of fathers as well. Male government employees who commission a surrogate (and have less than two living children) can now avail 15 days of paternity leave within six months of the child’s birth.
This policy change reflects the government’s effort to adapt to the evolving landscape of family structures. By extending leave benefits to those involved in surrogacy and adoption, the government aims to provide its employees with the necessary support during this important life event.
