Vedanta Aluminium has launched the third phase of Project Shree Shakti. It’s a company-wide initiative designed to integrate women employees into night shifts at its smelter operations in Jharsuguda, Odisha.
This phase of the project, a first for the state’s metals and manufacturing industry, was introduced by Priya Agarwal Hebbar, non-executive director, Vedanta and chairperson, Hindustan Zinc, on India’s 78th Independence Day.
Project Shree Shakti aims to provide women with the flexibility to choose their working hours while ensuring a secure and supportive work environment. It is a part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader commitment to creating an inclusive workplace, where women can take on key roles in core plant operations. By incorporating women into these positions, the company seeks to promote gender equity and provide more opportunities for women to advance in their careers.
As part of the project, women employees will manage advanced operational tasks traditionally handled by their male counterparts. This move highlights their technical capabilities and allows them to develop crucial skills through professional training in industrial processes and exposure to advanced technologies.
To support the smooth integration of women into these roles, Vedanta has implemented additional safety measures across its operations in Odisha. These include workforce- sensitisation sessions, specialised security teams for workplace commutes, and designated female drivers. The company has also created platforms for women employees to connect and support one another.
Speaking on the occasion, Priya Agarwal Hebbar, non-executive director, Vedanta and chairperson, Hindustan Zinc stated, “Project Shree Shakti has emerged as an enabler of positive transformation within Odisha’s industrial landscape. At Vedanta, we remain deeply committed to creating a conducive work environment where every team member, irrespective of gender, can grow and excel.”
Soni Kumari, pot tending machine Or PTM operator, Vedanta Aluminium’s potline operations in Jharsuguda, who was inducted under the first phase of the project also shared her experience: “Working under the Shree Shakti Project has been life-changing. The comprehensive work experience I received enabled me to balance my career and studies seamlessly. I gained valuable skills that have made me more independent and confident. This initiative has not only supported my professional growth but also empowered me to pursue my personal goals more effectively”.
