Google’s DeepMind division is facing significant internal unrest at the moment. Over 200 of its employees have signed an open letter opposing the company’s involvement with military organisations.
According to a Time Magazine report, the letter, dated 16 May, expresses concerns over the potential use of DeepMind’s AI technology for military purposes, which reportedly violates Google’s own AI standards. Hence, the employees are urging DeepMind’s leadership to investigate claims of military use of Google Cloud services.
Furthermore, they have demanded that a new governance framework be implemented to prevent future technologies from being used for military applications.
However, Google had not yet provided a substantial response to these concerns till date, leading to growing frustration among employees.
The letter specifically highlights Project Nimbus, a defence contract between Google and the Israeli military, and raises issues regarding the use of AI in Gaza for target selection and mass surveillance. The signatories emphasise their commitment to maintaining AI’s ethical standards. They further stressed that any military involvement undermines DeepMind’s position as a leader in ethical and responsible AI, contradicting its mission and stated AI principles.
While DeepMind employees believe their leadership shares these concerns, a Google representative defended the company’s practices, asserting that they adhere to their AI principles and are committed to developing technology responsibly. This internal conflict follows earlier protests against Project Nimbus, which led to the dismissal of several Google employees.
DeepMind, acquired by Google in 2014, operates under the promise that its technology would be used solely for non-military and non-surveillance purposes. DeepMind’s AI principles prohibit the creation of technologies that could cause overall harm or contribute to the development of dangerous capabilities. However, Google’s cloud division has contracts to provide its services, including AI developed by DeepMind, to various governments and military organisations, including those of Israel and the US.
