Tata Projects has launched a comprehensive upskilling initiative to empower its workforce and promote sustainable practices within the construction industry. The primary objective of the upskilling programme is to improve employability by equipping workers with specialised skills in construction.
The initiative is designed to create a skilled talent pool, enhance site management, and provide financial support to workers through comprehensive training and accredited certifications. Furthermore, it’ll enable them to advance their careers into higher positions and better-paying jobs.
Currently, the programme is being implemented at Tata Projects’ Chennai Metro Rail project site, in Madhavaram. Additionally, about 25 trainees are receiving specialised training on metro projects.
This initiative is part of Tata Projects’ broader efforts, encompassing three ongoing projects for Chennai Metro Rail. In Tamil Nadu, Tata Projects employs nearly 10,000 personnel, including 3,000 dedicated to the Chennai Metro project. The upskilling programme is also being extended to other locations, including the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road and TCS, Siruseri.
With a workforce of nearly 80,000 employees, around 40-50 per cent of whom are in the helper category, Tata Projects faces the challenge of upskilling its labour force to enhance productivity. The company’s Skill Shakthi and Nirmaan Nayak initiatives specifically target this group, aiming to elevate workers from unskilled to skilled and highly skilled categories.
Under the Skill Shakti programme, employees receive training tailored to site requirements in areas such as carpentry, bar bending, masonry and electrical work, with a five-week course designed to transition helpers to the semi-skilled category. While, the Nirmaan Nayak programme offers a structured career- advancement pathway with options for a one-year Diploma in Basics, a two-year Higher Diploma, and a three-year Degree in Site Accounts.
