Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has lifted its ban on the Progressive Students’ Forum (PSF). It has also revised its honour code, removing a contentious pledge. The pledge had restricted students from engaging in political activities.
The decision follows a detailed review by the institute’s authorities, emphasising the importance of maintaining academic integrity while ensuring mutual respect among its community.
The PSF, a Left-leaning students’ collective active since 2012, had been declared ‘unauthorised and illegal’ in August, leading to its temporary ban. This move was met with significant backlash from students, faculty and alumni, with the forum appealing directly to the chancellor for intervention. The ban was officially revoked earlier this week, with TISS issuing a statement highlighting its commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive academic environment.
As part of the revision, the institute has modified its honour code, removing language that previously discouraged political discussions or activities deemed disruptive. The updated code, dated 16 September, focuses on maintaining the academic atmosphere while allowing for disciplinary measures against violations of institute policies.
Progressive Students’ Forum welcomed the revocation and the honour code’s revision, viewing it as a reaffirmation of students’ rights to free speech and open debate on university campuses. The collective emphasised that such spaces are crucial for democratic discourse and the exchange of ideas without fear of reprisal.
The TISS administration called on students and faculty to continue upholding the institute’s values while avoiding actions that could disrupt its academic environment or tarnish its reputation.
